Three Uon students dies as boat drawns in Victoria

search for bodies of three students who drowned at the Mulokoba Waterfront in Budalangi in Busia in county ongoing.

The incident happened on December 31, 2022 ( New Year’s eve) as the deceased were enjoying a boat ride.

Police revealed the victims who were students at the University of Nairobi were said to be in their sixth, third and first years at the institution.

Bunyala Sub-county police commander Isaiah Mose said the deceased were part of a group of seven students on a fun boat ride.

He added the rest were rescued after the evening incident. The bodies of the three have yet to be retrieved.

Mose said search teams called off the exercise late Saturday night after darkness fell and the operation was suspended to today (Sunday) due to the darkness.

This comes barely a week after another tragic boat accident involving two of their kin at Sika beach in Mageta Island.

The casualties who are blood brothers, Dedan Omondi Damai, 22, and Wycliffe Onyango Damai, 21, had gone fishing at the beach before they met their untimely death.

Beach chairman Julius Odemba confirmed that their boats capsized as a result of strong waves in the lake a few minutes after casting their nets and off for the shore.

Another similar incident occurred when t wo people drowned at the popular Pirates Beach in Mombasa on Christmas Day after their boat capsized.

Police said there were 12 people on board when the incident happened.

Mombasa County Police Commander Stephen Matu said the two were among 12 family members who had travelled from Nairobi and had hired a boat for a short trip into the deep seas off the usually crowded public beach in the outskirts of Mombasa city.
